The H.S. education is a significant part of the overall education system. West Bengal has the distinction of being the pioneer in the modern education system. The Higher Secondary Education serves as step towards higher education for the young persons in the age group of 16-18 Years. In this context, the council has been making a sustained effort towards a quality uniform evaluation system all over the state encompassing more than 6800 schools and over 16 lakhs students.
Higher Secondary Examination is called by different names across India. CBSE, CICSE, and state boards of education conduct 12th class examination on their level for class 12 students in their schools. The examination time frame may be the same or different for the boards. Each board issues its separate time table for higher secondary examinations.
The origin of higher Secondary Education in India can be traced back to the report of the Secondary Education Commission, 1953. In reviewing the problems of secondary education in India, the Commission considered the basic short comings of the then secondary schools of the country.
Vocational Education is designed to prepare skilled work force in middle level in one or more group of occupations trade or job after matriculation at 10+2 stage of Education. The objective of the course is to enhance individuals’ employability and to provide an alternative for those pursuing higher education. It is a distinct stream intended to prepare students for identified occupations.
The Department of Vocational Higher Secondary Education conducts two year Vocational courses at the Higher Secondary level leading to the award of the “Certificate in Vocational Higher Secondary Education” in the concerned discipline. The courses are conducted in selected Government Higher Schools/High Schools (Aided)/ and Technical High Schools. Each institution gives admission to 25 candidates in one course. A marginal increase not exceeding 20% seats in a course is sanctioned subject to availability of facilities, demand from the local public and without any additional financial commitment.
